Eating With Braces
It’s important to know which foods you should steer clear of until you get your braces off. Eating the type of food mentioned on this page can damage your braces.
Foods To Avoid With Braces
  • Chewy foods — bagels and licorice
  • Crunchy foods — popcorn, chips, and ice
  • Sticky foods — caramel candies and chewing gum
  • Hard foods — nuts and hard candies
  • Foods you bite into — corn on the cob, apples, and carrots
Foods You CAN Eat With Braces
  • Dairy — soft cheese, pudding, and milk-based drinks
  • Breads — soft tortillas, pancakes, and muffins without nuts
  • Grains — pasta and soft cooked rice
  • Meats/poultry — soft cooked chicken, meatballs, and lunch meats
  • Seafood — tuna, salmon, and crab cakes
  • Vegetables — mashed potatoes, steamed spinach, and beans
  • Fruits — applesauce, bananas, and fruit juice
  • Treats — ice cream without nuts, milkshakes, Jell-O, and soft cake
Soreness Caused from Braces and Appliances
The first few days after getting your braces on you will most likely experience some discomfort and soreness. This is perfectly normal! To relieve your pain you can swish and gargle warm salt water in your mouth for a couple of minutes.

It is also not uncommon for your lips, cheeks, and tongue to become irritated while they get used to the braces. If the issue continues, we can give you some wax to put on your braces to lessen the tenderness.
Loose Teeth, Wire & Bands
You might notice that your teeth feel loose; don’t worry. Your braces will loosen your teeth to move them into the right position and then they will tighten into place.

If the wires and bands on your braces become loose, schedule an appointment with us for repairs. If any part of your braces falls off, be sure to save it and bring it into the office with you.
Take Care Of Your Appliances
If you don’t take proper care of your braces, you can actually lengthen your treatment process. Wearing the rubber bands, headgear, retainer, and more is necessary to move your teeth and jaw into the correct position.
Playing Sports With Braces
You will be perfectly safe wearing braces and playing a sport. We recommend that you wear a mouth guard to protect your teeth and your braces. We can help you find the right mouth guard if you’re not sure which one will work best for your situation.

In case of a sports injury or emergency, check your mouth and appliance for damage. Then, you should schedule an appointment with us, so we can repair any damage.
